My name is Roberto Luongo, President, and Founder of Bosco Plumbing in 1995. I am one of 4 children of my parents Aniello & Maria.
Back in Italy, my father’s family lived near the forest, so friends from town nicknamed them the family who lived near the forest; translation in Italian – “Bosco”. Aniello & Maria immigrated to Canada in 1965 unemployed and lived in a bedroom apartment my uncle Pasquale promised them for a few months…until they got on their feet. My mother went to work as a seamstress & my father Aniello took a job as a steam fitter [work with hot water heating/boilers] who went on to get his license and work all over the GTA for the biggest mechanical contractors in Toronto at the time.
In 1989, as an 18-year-old in my last year of high school, I thought it would be a good idea to take a few weeks off for summer fun before heading to University to become an Accountant; was I wrong. On the last day of school when I got home, my dad had informed me he had taken the liberty to find me a job with one of his old employers…as you can imagine I was shocked and of course disappointed my partying days had ended before they even began.
That Monday morning, I drove 45 minutes to work at 6 am to meet my first journeyman plumber Mario. Mario was an interesting man; he would always turn his back on me when working. Confused I would ask him “Mario, why don’t you ever show me what you’re doing?” he’d respond “if I teach you, one day you’ll take my job”. That was my first introduction to a tradesperson.
I went on that summer to enjoy what I was doing [ I wasn’t working with Mario anymore] and decided to stay in the field and not go to University as I had planned. It was a decision I would never regret, although there were tough days; I loved to learn the trade and the thousands of code applications required. I was the only student to score a 4.0 [4.0 is perfect; this is me patting myself on my back] in my graduating class and I wanted to learn more. A couple of years after receiving my Journeyman’s license, I went out to get my Master License; who would have known there is such a thing as Master Plumber License? In fact, you are technically not allowed to operate a plumbing company in Ontario without one.
During my 5-year plumbing apprenticeship, I worked for several plumbing companies in the high-rise, residential, commercial & industrial sector. As I gained experience in the trade I began to think about guys like Mario and how they wouldn’t teach the next generation. How he wanted to hoard all his experience & wisdom and not share with his students or customers. In 1995, I decided to make a difference in the plumbing industry and start my own company revolved around customer service & staff experiences.
So, there I was growing a company without any post-secondary education running a four-truck operation and not having a clue about growing. In 2001 I decided to take a huge leap of faith and join a best practice group called Nexstar Network. This group helped [still helps today] grow our company where we believe in our staff to make decisions necessary to keep our customers satisfied with 5-star service; by 2011 we offered heating and air conditioning service with over 40 staff members.
As you can imagine the story will continue; I hope you can be a part of the new story going forward. I hope you too will take a leap of faith and call our great team to help us continue to grow and build off a strong foundation while helping you at the same time.
